Far from Jerry built

The sale of Francis Maude’s constituency home

After a week when he was criticised for having made a blunder by stating that drivers should keep “extra fuel in a jerry can” as a “sensible precaution” in case tanker drivers go on strike, Tory minister Francis Maude was probably hoping for a weekend without any press mentions.

In an article for the Mail Online, however, Jo Macfarlane reveals that Maude and his wife, Christina, have put there Sussex home on the market for £1.5 million. Jokily, the piece suggests that the property has “plenty of space for a jerry can” as well as a game larder, a gardener’s lavatory and a butler’s pantry.

Platts Green House, which the Maudes purchased for £342,500 in 1996, is a substantial 9 bedroom house that was built in the “Wealden” style. Standing in 4 acres of gardens and 8 acres of paddocks, the house benefits from a heated swimming pool, hard tennis court and a stable yard with five loose boxes. With 3 reception rooms and a large family kitchen with AGA, there is plenty of space for entertaining and the agents are keen to reveal that there is a “discreet entrance” that must have been a key selling point to the government minister.

Close to the A24, Platts Green House counts Katie Price as a somewhat unwelcome neighbour. Glamour model Price, who previously was known as “Jordan,” Katie Andre and Katie Reid, paid £2 million for a 6 bedroom modern house with 53 acres in June 2010 and intended to share it with her second husband Alex Reid and children Harvey Daniel Price, Junior Savva Andreas Andre and Princess Tiaamii Crystal Esther Andre. They subsequently separated in October 2011.

With paparazzi regularly blockading the drive to the Price residence and frequent police visits, Dial Post is no longer a quiet leafy, hamlet. Residents, it is claimed, are very unimpressed at Price’s presence and some have gone as far as to claim that her and her “gaudy” pink Range Rover have “lowered the tone” of the area.

In response to questions from the Mail, a spokesman for Maude stated:

“Mr Maude and his wife are downsizing now their five grownup children are leaving home, and seeking a smaller property.”

Platts Green House, surely, must be the perfect home for a fan of Ms Price. Alternatively, the 33 year old could expand her estate by purchasing it with some of the £40 million fortune she’s made from modeling, singing, writing books, fashion, television and music. Any buyer, however, would be wise not to mention jerry cans when viewing.

Who'd want to have her as a neighbour? I certainly would not.
